Roofing breaks the rule the rest of this list runs on. In the storm-driven model the biggest money isn't a homeowner deciding it's time for a new roof — it's an insurance claim, and the sale happens on a doorstep, not in a search result.
A storm goes through. The companies that are good at this know exactly which streets and ZIP codes it hit, and they walk them: we'll inspect it free, we'll file the claim with your insurer, we'll do the repair. Most homeowners have never seriously priced a roof, so being told it might be replaced at the insurer's expense is a genuinely attractive offer. The marketing is a person standing on a porch.
Which means advertising here is not buying leads — it's raising the close rate of the people knocking. After a significant storm three or four roofers walk the same street in the same week and the homeowner picks one; whoever they've heard of already wins a disproportionate share of that choice. So we run reach into the affected ZIPs to be familiar by the time your crew is at the door. Cost per lead is undefined for a campaign like that, because the click never becomes a lead. What you measure is the close rate with air cover against without — and roofing is the one trade where a clean controlled test is easy: two adjacent ZIPs, same storm, same crew, one with a campaign and one without. Almost nobody runs it.
Two things follow. When the insurer pays, price sensitivity collapses and the competition moves to trust and paperwork — handling the claim is the actual product, so it should be visible everywhere before the doorstep. And the economics are excellent while the volume is thin: fifteen signed jobs a month doesn't give an ad platform enough events to optimize toward sales, so you optimize higher up the funnel. Between storms, planned replacements get bid into unprofitable territory by everyone trying to keep crews busy — that auction isn't worth winning, and the quiet season is better built out of referrals, maintenance and the search visibility you earned in the busy months.
