Fourteen home-service trades, and the marketing breaks differently in each.
"Home services" isn't one trade. A roofer at a $15,000 ticket and a mid-teens margin and a cleaning company at $171 and 30% are playing different games, even though both get found in the same search. Below is what actually differs: average ticket, how long the customer will wait, seasonality, and which channels pay back.
The three axes that decide everything
- Ticket vs patience: the bigger the job, the longer the customer waits — and the differently your advertising has to behave
- Barrier to exit: where an employee can go independent tomorrow, the hiring plan has to start before the campaigns
- Margin means nothing without the ticket: 15% of $15,000 beats 50% of $265

The same campaign built for roofing and for cleaning loses in both. Roofing has excellent economics and thin volume: fifteen signed jobs a month doesn't give a platform enough events to optimize toward sales. Cleaning has the inverse problem — about $51 of margin on a one-time job, with the whole economics resting on converting one-time cleans into recurring contracts. "A good ad account" means different things in those two rooms.
So we calculate the maximum per service line rather than per company. Inside a single HVAC business the margin runs from about 10% on installation to about 50% on service — and it's installation, keeping a tenth of the money, that turns out to be the most profitable line.
